Chapter I

One cup of coffee and that’s all Yunho needs to function the whole morning and burning his tongue from his first sip of his instant brew is definitely a good wake up call. He did his daily morning routine in a rush. He was running around his room – grunting and frantic– at seven in the morning. And grunting only means one thing: Jung Yunho is running late. He brushed his teeth and fixed his hair in one swift before going straight to the door. Yunho was putting on his shoes when he realized that he’s forgetting something. Damn winter coat. He groaned. He ran back to his room and pulled his thick black coat out of his closet. He was a mess, his room is worse and his bed – he can’t even describe it in words, but who cares if he’s running late for his morning class. He was about to get out of the room when he tripped on his chair, knocked his bedside table and sent his things flying.

“Aishhhh.” He picked up his things and shove them on his table. He’ll deal with that later. The last one he picked was his parent’s framed photograph. Examining it for a good minute somehow made him sign in relief. No scratch, no crack. Good.

“Sorry mom. Sorry dad.” He clutched the hems of his long sleeves and wiped the frame before putting it back.

Oh crap, I’m really late, he thought as he bolted to the door.

Getting late is one thing but slipping in on his first class is another. It was his theory class and the most boring class with the most boring professor. He reached the auditorium where Mr. Han conducts his discussion. He never told them his age but the students suspect that the professor is on his late 70s. He talks really slow and for a morning class, he can definitely have his students in sleep mode again. He waited until his professor turned around before going through the back door and running his life to his seat.

“Hey man!” his friend sitting beside him greeted in an enthusiastic whisper. “You’re late.”

“I know, Junsu! I slept in.” Yunho was pulling his bag off his shoulders when he heard his professor called someone. This is why he doesn’t want to be late.

“You are late again, Mr. Jung.” The old professor lowered his thick-brimmed glasses as he eyed Yunho on his seat. How can he memorize everyone’s name at that age, no one knew.

Yunho gave him a really apologetic look in hopes that he will get through this. “I am really sorry, sir.” He cocked his head to his side as though he’s asking Junsu for help but he only gave him an awkward smile.

“Extra paper at 1 in my office.” Tsk.

Jung Yunho is currently a senior business student in one of South Korea’s most prominent universities and he got in by scholarship. He’s a full scholar and that says a lot. He’s one of his department’s top students and though the morning incident with Mr. Han isn’t the only one on his record, the professors choose to ignore these since he can ace his exams without sweat.

The whole day was spent inside the university’s perimeters: going from a class to another, lunch break with Junsu, writing his extra paper work, and going to another class again. His last class ended at seven in the evening and when everyone are heading off to their homes, Yunho is going straight to his part-time job.

He arrived at Checkmate thirty minutes after where he works as a barista. He changed to his work clothes and worked ‘til past midnight. It was a typical day for Yunho. He juggles his studies with his work to support himself. It was hard but since he has no one with him, he needs to work to support his ass. At nine, both his parents died and he was taken in by relatives. When he reached legal age, he then decided to live on his own.

His shift ended at two in the morning and with a loud “I’m out!” to call it a day, he left Checkmate. He was clutching on his jacket for warmth since the night is too chilly. He was thankful that it’s not snowing or he will sure freeze his ass while walking. The walk from his workplace to his house is quite short. It takes him only fifteen minutes by feet and renting a cab is a total waste of money.

He’s walking on his usual route; past the usual street and past the lamp post he’d been cursing so much the past few weeks. It was only the source of light in the area and the poor thing is dying. He made a few steps past it when he suddenly heard a loud thump. He was sure the sound came behind him. It made him stop on his heels but didn’t look back. He remembered his friend, Junsu, warning him about thugs roaming around the city and people getting mobbed or murdered at night. He dismissed the idea of it but even though you're a guy, when you’re walking alone at the wee hours of night, on a deserted street no less, paranoia will definitely kick in.

“Urghhhhhhhhhh” Yunho heard someone groaning as if he’s in a horrible pain. He stood still trying to sense his surroundings. Then he heard the groans again. He turned around and instantly received the shock of his life when he saw a man lying on the ground on his side, wounded and totally naked.

“Hey!” He immediately went beside the man and tried to call for him again. “Mister! Are you alright?!”

Shit shit shit. What should I do?

The man was trembling. There are blood all over his body and when Yunho tried to shake the man awake, he flinched as soon as his palms made contact with the other’s skin. “Oh shit, you’re freezing!”

He pulled his coat off of him and wrapped it around the man lying on the floor. It went past through his hips and covered half of his thigh. No one will really care if he’s flashing the whole city his body since there’s no one on the street except them. He shook him again in attempt to wake him up. No response.

“Mister, are you dead?!”

No shit Yunho, corpses doesn’t speak. He pulled the man’s wrist and tried to feel his pulses. Oh there it is. “You’re still alive. Come on man, wake up.” He shook him again and tapped his face. Then the wounded man’s eyes flutter open. It opened a bit and his cold, bloodied hands reached for his face. Yunho contemplated whether to pull out or not. But before he could even do it, the man opened his mouth, his palm still on his cheeks.

“Such a beautiful human…” he said before completely blacking out on him.
